John Kim began with the smallest Venom Vault ticket and finished with the biggest poker score of his life. The Chicago player advanced from an $0.80 Survivor Flip Step ticket to a $2,650 Mini Phil's Thrill entry, then won $42,700 at Americas Cardroom on August 9.
Kim, known online as DotardEatLysol, outlasted a 61-entry field. The event generated a $152,500 prize pool and paid seven places.
The path to that Sunday result came through the Venom Vault. Its guaranteed prizes can include Venom Survivor Flip Step tickets valued from $0.80 to $350. Survivor Flips are eight-seat, all-in Sit & Go tournaments, and Kim kept moving forward until his initial ticket had become a $2,650 entry to Mini Phil's Thrill.
For Kim, a 47-year-old sales consultant who joined Americas Cardroom in 2021, the result eclipsed a previous online high of about $1,400. He has played poker for more than two decades and said smaller fields are generally where he feels most comfortable.
One hand transformed his position near the money bubble. With nine players remaining, Kim held pocket aces and about 680,000 chips on the button. He flat-called a shove of just under 70,000, then faced an all-in move of roughly 700,000 from the player directly to his left. Kim called and saw pocket sixes. His aces held, moving him to approximately 1.5 million chips.
By the time the tournament reached seven-handed play, Kim was the chip leader. The payouts initially added pressure at the final table, but he settled into the rhythm of the game, focused on each decision and began enjoying the run by three-handed play.
The win carries significance beyond the virtual table. After a recent car repossession and a move into a family member's home, Kim intends to prioritize transportation, housing and the care of his three dogs.
Poker fans can revisit the full final table with hole cards revealed and explore the Venom Vault promotion before its Sunday, August 30 conclusion.
